The island of Malta, situated between Sicily at the foot of Italy and Tunisia on the North African coast, is unique in terms of its history, culture and nationality.

Unlike Crete, which is part of Greece, Sardinia which is part of Italy, Corsica which is French and Mallorca which is Spanish, Malta is an independent Republic. Like many islands in the Mediterranean, Malta has gone through various states of foreign ownership during its past. Rulers of the island include the Romans, Arabs, the Knights of St John, the Ottoman Empire, the French under Napoleon, and the British in 1800 before Malta finally gained independence in 1964. It played a huge role during the Second World War were it acted as a refuge for injured member of the Allied Forces, while under attack by Italian and German forces until 1943. Malta has been a member of the EU since 2004 and adopted the Euro in 2008.

Today the Republic of Malta is slowly building its own reputation as a centre of commerce and tourism. Despite the turbulent past of the island, the capital Valletta still retains many interesting archaeological and architectural points of interest.

During their 270 year occupation of the island, the Knights of St Johns constructed many impressive buildings, just as they did on the island of Rhodes. Of course some were damaged during the Second World War, but many remain intact in Valletta.

They key attraction of Malta besides its interesting past, buildings and culture is of course its weather. Located right in the centre of the Mediterranean, azure blue waters surround an island that benefits from over 200 days of sunshine each year. For 8 months of the year the average daytime temperature sits between 19 and 32 degrees Celsius and doesn’t really get much hotter than that, making a very pleasant place to spend a holiday.

One of the more interesting attractions on Malta is the prehistoric Hypogeum or underground chamber, discover in 1902 and consisting of over 500 square metres of rooms, chambers and corridors. It was built on three levels and dates back to before 3000BC. The Hypogeum is UNESCO World Heritage site and only a limited number of tourists are permitted to enter each day so best not try and go there during busy periods unless you’ve had your name on the waiting list for tickets, which can grow to as long as six weeks at times.

Flights to Malta arrive from all over the world at Luqa airport, just south of the capital. The island has had various airports over the years, especially during its important period as a military base. The old airport at Ta’ Qali is now used as a centre for recreation. There are parks and open spaces there as well as the National sports stadium. It is also the location for many of the island’s biggest festivals and concerts.

As far as holiday resorts are concerned, Malta has plenty of choices from busy thriving cosmopolitan areas with an abundance of restaurants, shops and clubs. The best are on the northern coast, providing the opportunity for walking along promenades and watching the world go by. For a quieter location visitors could take a trip to the nearby island of Gozo. This small island sits just three miles off Malta’s North West coast and everything here is run off at a much slower pace. Made up primarily of small fishing villages there are also a selection of quiet beaches such as Ramla Bay, the tiny San Blas beach or the amazing inland sea at Dwejra Lake, which is fed by a tunnel through the rocks.

Back on Malta the best beaches are at Anchor Bay, Golden Bay, Paradise and Hola beach in the north of the island. In the south Peter’s Pool is popular, as is Pretty Bay if you don’t mind overlooking the commercial port. For swimmers the outdoor pool that sits on the island’s south east tip is an interesting location. This 50m salt water pool is home to the island’s Marsascala Sports Club, was the National Pool until a new one was built in 1993 at Ta’ Qali (Tal-Qroqq). Often during the summer the pool hosts tournaments for the sport of water polo, which is unusually popular on the island.

The figures come from an annual study of building land prices carried out each year by the statistical service of the French Government.

They show that on average prices increased by 6% over 2007, after twelve successive years of double digit growth.

As the average surface area of the plots reduced from 1284m² in 2007 to 1240m² in 2008 this kept down the price increase for each plot to 2.9% (8.9% in 2007).

The cheapest building plots could be found in the Limousin, where they sold for an average of €14m², the same price as in 2007.

The most expensive area was the Ile de France, where prices per plot averaged €190m², slightly down on the figure for 2007.

The above figures should only be used as a guide, as they do mask large variations in prices as between urban and rural locations. Thus, the average price for a building plot in Paris was €320m², whilst in rural areas it averaged €28m² across the country.

As might be expected, the size of the plots was also greater in the countryside than in the towns, with the former having an average plot size of 1556m², while in urban locations with a population greater than 100,000 it averaged less than 1000m².

The study also examined actual building costs and found that the average cost across the country was €1047m². As the average external surface area of the properties was 134m² this gave an average build cost of €140,000.

Lowest building costs could be found in Centre at €942m², while highest costs were in the Ile de France at €1172m² (excluding Corsica, which was slightly higher).

But not everyone wants to drive halfway across Britain to keep on driving in a different country, which is where car hire firms come in useful. This continues our guide to some of the more popular driving destinations throughout Europe.

France

France is heaven for the gourmet. The abundance of fine wine, diverse foodstuff and a picturesque setting to consume them in, few can resist the appeal of our nearest European neighbour. Car hire is an easy and economical way to get around, and most of the major companies have offices there. The capital, Paris, is best explored on foot or Metro, but the outlying region is great driving country. If you are in the market for fine French wine and food, why don’t you consider the world famous Provence region in southeastern France? Perhaps you will find a bargain wine in this sun-drenched ideal tourist location, which is marred only by the number of tourists. I hope that you’ll enjoy yourself on this fact-filled wine education tour of this French candidate for paradise in which we review a local red wine based on the red Mourvedre grape.

Among France’s eleven wine-growing regions Provence ranks ninth in acreage if you include the island of Corsica, which most people do in spite of their considerable differences. Provence is synonymous with rose wine, and although its percentage is declining, happily according to many wine lovers. Over 50% of Provence wine is rose, or as some might say, pink. Many of its wines are pink and flabby, but others are not. The region is home to dozens of grape varieties, often not found elsewhere. With an average of three thousand hours of sun a year, it is no surprise that many Provence wines taste baked.

One secret to making fine tasting wine is limiting its production. The Bandol AOC reviewed below and its high-quality neighbors are capped by law at 180 cases per acre (40 hectoliters per hectare). In this area growers could double their production, almost without trying. But any gains in quantity would be lost in quality. Voila. Limiting Corsica’s wine output has helped reduce Europe’s famous, or rather infamous, wine lake.

While Provence has many great places to visit, let’s start by honoring this wine’s home town, Bandol, population eight thousand. It’s right on the coast, about thirty five miles (fifty five kilometers) southeast of Marseille and has become quite a tourist attraction. Bandol’s port has a capacity of fifteen hundred sailing vessels which means many, many yachts. It is quite a center for scuba diving and deep-sea fishing. In high season unless you love crowds you are better off visiting the vineyards right outside town.

For a change of pace head about four miles (six kilometers) north of Bandol to La Cadiere d’Azur, a medieval village of some three thousand perched on a hilltop overlooking the vineyards. Vincent Van Gogh was here. When you see it you’ll know why.

Before we reviewing the Bandol wine and imported cheeses that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are some suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region. Start with Caviar d’Aubergines (Egglant Puree). For your second course savor Poisson aux Herbes de Provence (Fish with Provence Herbs). And as dessert indulge yourself with Tarte aux Noix (Walnut and Honey Tart).

Wine Reviewed Domaine Le Galantin Bandol Rouge 2005 14.0% about $20.00

Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. Description Bandol, the most serious wine of Provence, [is] typically a deep-flavoured, lush red blend dominated by the Mourvedre grape. Tasting Note (Jancis Robinson, Oxford Companion to Wine, 3rd Edition, 2006) This version is mostly Mourvedre with a touch of Grenache for balance. Its lovely collection of aromas include cherry, anise, marzipan, and garrigue. And now for my review.

Before the first meal I sipped some of this wine. It was dark, fruity, powerful, and long. You know that the wine is present. The first meal was delicatessen-made thin strips of beef with sliced vegetables. I added rice and a Thai hot sauce. The wine remained long and strong with dark chocolate. I have the distinct impression that this Bandol could hold up to anything. I am getting an image: people sitting around a campfire devouring raw or scarcely cooked bear meat – I have no idea what bear meat tastes like but I know this Bandol could handle it. This is not a wine for watercress sandwiches – with or without the crusts. I liked the wine with a cocoa strudel. The chocolate of the wine accompanied the “chocolate” of the cake. There was, however, a discordant note that I will discuss shortly.

The second tasting involved broiled beef ribs accompanied by jerk sauce, barbecued red skin potatoes, and commercial grilled eggplant. The wine was thick and mouthfilling, but there was something about its acidity that was not quite right, let’s not mince words; it was unpleasant. This also happened with the first meal. It may be hard to believe but swirling the glass vigorously removed this secondary defect. In the present series of reviews covering more than sixty wines this is the first time that I have encountered such a problem.

The final meal consisted of a pan-fried lamb chop that had been marinated in olive oil, garlic, and sliced red onion plus an artichoke, garlic, and tomato salsa and corn on the cob. The wine was full and long brimming with chocolate and to a lesser extent tobacco. The defect is long gone and the wine was excellent. As strong as it was the Bandol accompanied rather than overpowered the subtle meat. Jancis Robinson was right, who am I to doubt her? I tasted garrigue, which are Mediterranean spices.

The first cheese pairing was with a mild-tasting Italian Pecorino Fruilano, which somehow cut across the wine. Frankly I was surprised that such a weak cheese could denature such a strong wine. The Bandol retained its taste when paired with the more flavorful Dutch Edam. I tasted deep chocolate.

Final verdict. This wine is a winner. I must confess that I am somewhat baffled by the problem with the defect. But I am very, very willing to take the chance on it again. Just between you and me, I won’t waste it on cheese pairings.

The ship leaves Corsica in the evening, sails through the night and docks in the beautiful island of Sardinia. The traditional Sardinian foods can be sampled at lunchtime in one of the numerous seafront restaurants, many of which specialise in local fish dishes.

The ship continues cruising the Mediterranean Sea before hopping between the Balearic islands of Menorca and Majorca. The scheduled itinerary continues with day nine at sea relaxing and soaking up the sun, arriving in Messina, Sicily on day ten where a whole host of discovery and sightseeing adventures await. Late afternoon the ship leaves this delightful island to make its way to Naples, Italy for the start of week two of the cruise, the ship remains docked in Naples for the whole day which gives passengers plenty of time to go ashore and discover this vibrant and exciting city before returning onboard to carry on cruising to Livorno, Italy to sample the delights of Tuscany.

There were numerous and almost everywhere until a few years ago, today many have been abandoned because of the transfer in the city.

The coast is jagged and divided into a continuous series of small fjords, bays and islets that form the archipelago of La Maddalena, with its wondrefull islands, a natural bridge towards the nearby Corsica, where there is also the island of Caprera, last shelter of Giuseppe Garibaldi and the place where you can find his remains.

While on one side this territory is home to the famous Costa Smeralda, with Porto Cervo with its well know harbour, holiday paradise for many people, on the other hand it is not difficult to find lonely places where to freely enjoy beautiful natural sceneries.

Chevrolet is one of the most loved automakers in the market. One of its vehicles that were definitely liked by the public was the Beretta. Chevy fanatics were left hanging because of the vehicle’s disappearance after just a few periods on sale.

What could be the reason behind the vehicle’s disappearance?

In 1988 Chevrolet unleashed a more fuel efficient vehicle through a small two door coupe – the Chevy Beretta. There were 6 different models that Chevrolet made throughout the Beretta’s life cycle: the base model, GT, GTU, GTZ, Z26, and the very rare Indy.

On its first existence, the Chevy Beretta has two engines. There was the 4 cylinder 2.0L engine. For better acceleration, the Beretta has an optional a 2.8L V6 with a manual transmission.

As the traditional era evolved into a high tech one, the exterior of the coupe changed. But was what greatly noticed was the huge improvement in the vehicle’s under car parts. From 2.0 to 2.2, the cheaper 4 cylinders even grew more in size to 2.3. The V6 lines of engines used the popular 3.1L that delivered over 140hp.

From 1988-89, the GTU special Beretta Model went on sale. With the colors black, white, and red, the GTU had stiffer suspension and was capable of 0.92 G on the skid pad.

Produced from 1990-1993, the GTZ was the high-performance Beretta. Standard on this vehicle was the Oldsmobile’s 2.3L High Output Quad 4. This produced 180 hp (134 kW) and 160 ft•lbf (217 N•m) of torque. The Getrag 5-speed manual transmission and GM’s FE7 performance suspension were also included in the list of standard equipments.

With more refined Chevy Beretta parts, the vehicle in 1994 came with an optional 3100 series engine, a more powerful one. Though the said engine seemed to be enough for such a light car, it was not still enough for the Beretta manufacturing team. They manufactured the Quad Four which had 4 cylinders that pumps out over 210hp. However, the Chevy fans were in dismay because the innovation was made only in limited quantity.

In 1990, the Indy was manufactured. It featured excellent looking ground effects, more eye appealing style with striking exteriors. It was generally a good looking sports car. It had the colors of bright Sun Fire Yellow and Turquoise, and it offered a convertible as an option. However, the Chevy fans, for the second time, were kept hanging. Only 3 convertible yellow Indy’s were produced and sold in the market.

Due to two major factors, in 1996, Chevrolet halted the production of the Beretta. The first reason was that the competition for rights over the name brand ‘Beretta’ was being lost to a gun corporation in Germany. The second reason was that the Beretta definitely cost high due to the limited quantities, short lifespan with rare models and Quad 4 option.

About Chevrolet Beretta

A front wheel drive coupe, the Chevrolet Beretta was produced from 1987 through 1996 by the General Motors’ Chevrolet division. It was built based on the GM L platform in Wilmington, Delaware and Linden, New Jersey. Among its family members based on the platform are the Chevrolet Corsica and the Pontiac Tempest sedan, which was only sold in Canada. The Beretta was engineered in the same design studio as the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette Chevrolet – in Exterior Studio 3.

The sales of the Berettas continuously declined every year of production as its fans did not seem to appreciate the two-door models anymore. And in 1996, Chevrolet ended production of both the Beretta and Corsica.

The Corsica would be replaced by the 1997 Chevrolet Malibu. But the Beretta had no replacement.

The World Rally Championship, just like other major motorsport, is nearing its conclusion. The next race will be staged in Corsica and teams have been busy with their preparations for the event. The event in Corsica is the second of the back to back asphalt road events in WRC’s calendar. Team Subaru is already in Corsica and they are busy with the preparations for the said event.

Before the event, the team of mechanics for Subaru will rebuild the car. For transportation of the cars to be easy, the team takes the car apart. This is also done because with every new event, the car should be given a different setup. When it is time to rebuild the car, the team’s mechanics carefully adjusts different things on the car which have been specified after practice sessions.

One of the things that teams’ mechanics check is the car’s geometry. It should be checked to ensure that the car will run balanced. This is essential to avoid accelerated tire wear and unbalanced handling. These things should be avoided at all costs when teams are competing over stages of more than 30 kilometers with just mere tenths of a second separating competitors.

The first thing that mechanics do with the car is to drive it onto mobile car scales. A car scale is essentially composed of a frame of flat aluminum raised a few inches from the floor. It is the same size as the wheelbase of the car. The four wheels of the car will have to match the four corners of the frame. The height of the frame can be adjusted with the aid of a spirit level. The scale should be adjusted so that it will be flat. Ensuring a flat surface is very important as a non-flat surface will give erroneous measurements.

The corners where the wheels of the Subaru head gasket -equipped car sit on have sensors used by the scale in measuring the weight of the car. Team mechanics then are tasked with interpreting the reading on the scales. The reading will tell them if the car is balanced or not. The front wheels should match and also the rear wheels. This is done so that the weight in the left side and the right side be equaled. If the weight of each side is unequal, tire wear on the heavier side will likely lead to a poor performance.

After checking the weight distribution of the car, mechanics will then move on to checking the car’s camber. Camber is the angle made by the wheel with the car’s vertical axis. A wheel leaning inward has a negative camber. Negative camber is good for cornering as it allows the tires to be positioned in a way that there would be less friction. For a straight-line acceleration though, it is better to have a zero camber as it allows the tread of the tire complete contact with the road. Mechanics need to determine the right camber. If a stage includes a lot of twists and turns, they might opt for a negative camber while if it involves a lot of straightaway runs, they can set the camber to zero.

Corsica is in the Tyrrhenian Sea in the western Mediterranean, south west of the French Riviera and west of the coast of Tuscany. French is the official language of Corsica, but a large number of Corsicans speak Corsican Corsu. It has no current legal status and French Government has yet to ratify the European minority language charter. A rugged, unspoilt region of France known as the scented isle, Corsica has a distinctive character moulded by centuries of invasion and occupation.

Most villages are set back from the sea, about 15 kilometres at the foot of the mountains or in the interior. They are generally built of granite and have many little streets with the houses close together. The farmed land is outside the village and is mainly given to grazing goats and sheep, cheese and wine production. The population is less than 100 people, though many grow much bigger in the summer when the holidaymakers and families returning to their ancestral homes.

The birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte who was born in Ajaccio, the capital of Corsicas southern department in 1769. The Mansion Bonaparte in the town is now a museum.

Cardinal Fesch requested the construction of the building that holds Musee Fesch. Following his death in Rome in 1839, he left more than 1000 works of art to his home town of Ajaccio. There are several collections here, both temporary and permanent. Among the permanent collection are pieces from the Neapolitan and Roman Baroque periods, as well as Napoleonic and early Italian pieces.

Local culture finds expression in handicrafts and folk music. The Tuscan influenced Corsican language is taught in the islands schools. The islands architectural features include Genoese fortresses, baroque churches and Watchtowers. Much of the population is concentrated in the main towns of Ajaccio and Bastia.

Tourism is an important part of the islands economy, but large stretches of the seaboard remain undeveloped.

Scuba Diving is best done on the rugged west coast or the south coast. Good dive centres are found in and around Calvi, Propriano and Bonifacio.

To relax and take in the night, try Place St Nicolas in Bastia, the quaint 19th century square is lined with cafes and hosts summer concerts. For a more lively night in the summertime, the numerous discos along the beaches can reach peak crowds at midnight, with dancing and drinking until dawn. In general, Corsicans are reserved and little cafes and bars are the most popular form of nightlife.
